Energy Drinks and Alcohol Not a Good Mix
Published at 2011-11-21 11:19:19
Mixing alcohol with highly caffeinated “energy drinks” is a new trend in the bar scene. It seems logical enough at first glance: Alcohol is a central nervous system (CNS) depressant and makes you tired…Caffeine is a CNS stimulant, so why not counter the effect of alcohol with a caffeine? The reality is that, mixing the two creates several health risks:

Because the caffeine masks the effects of alcohol, it is easier to drink more alcohol than your body can safely handle. These mixed drinks may contain more alcohol than you suspect. Because energy drinks are sometimes relatively more expensive, it is more cost-effective for a bartender to pour more alcohol than the energy drink when pouring your cocktail.

In addition to the physical effects of alcohol, it can cause very serious and life-threatening liver damage when confused at high levels. The alcohol already has a dehydrating effect on your body. Adding caffeine, which also has a dehydrating effect only compounds those dehydrating effects. Dehydration is associated with many health risks, so think twice before ordering your "Alcohol-Stimulate" cocktail next time..
